Type and custom shapes + Layer Styles

description of assignment

There are two parts to this assignment. The first part involves using type and adding layer styles such as a drop shadow and bevel and emboss. The second part is using custom shape tools, making a new layer for each custom shape and adding layer styles to custom shapes.

Objectives:
To read and follow directions
To create a Photoshop document according to directions
To use the Typing Tool to create and color type
To use the Custom Shape Tool to create custom shapes on separate layers
To resize type using the Free Transform command
To apply Layer Styles to a type layer

1. Open photoshop. If photoshop is not already open, in the finder menu bar, go to Go>Applications>Adobe Photoshop CS3

Go to Window>Workspace>Essentials or Design

2. Go to File>New>Name: type your name_typing tool + layer styles
width: 10 inches (not pixels)
height:10 inches
resolution: 100
color mode: rgb
background contents: white
click OK

Typing your name on a layer

1. Click on the T in the tools palette and select the Horizontal Type Tool









2. Click once inside the document window. Do not click and drag.
3. In the Options Bar, select a Typeface, Point Size, and Color





4. Type your first name (and last name if you wish)
5. Click on the check mark on the top menu
6. Resize: go to Edit>Free Transform. Scale and resize your name.
7. Click the check mark when you have what you want or the cancel button if it’s not what you want.


Applying Layer Styles

1. Look at the Layers Palette and be sure the layer with your name on it is still highlighted
2. In the Photoshop menu bar, go to Layer>Layer Style
3. Go to Drop Shadow. Click OK when you have what you want.

Apply another Layer Style
1. In the Photoshop menu bar, go to Layer>Layer Style
2. Apply bevel & emboss


Save your work

Make 4 different layers with your name in different typefaces and with different layer styles

1. Repeat and create 3 more layers with your name using a different typeface, color, and size on each layer
2. Apply a different layer style to each layer

Now, warp type on each layer by using the Warp Type Tool





Remember, you can click the "eyeballs" off and on to work with individual layers more easily.

To finish, apply a background color using the Paint Bucket Tool

Save your work into your folder

1. Correct number of type layers
2. Correct layer styles
3. Warp Tool used on all layers
4. Backgroud layer is colored










Part two

Create another Photoshop document using the same specifications as the one you just finished.

Use the Custom Shape Tool to create 7 different custom shapes with 7 different colors on 7 different layers. Apply a different layer style to each custom shape layer. Apply these layer styles: drop shadow, bevel and emboss, outer glow, gradient overlay (click on Gradient: to see all the different gradients), and 3 different pattern overlays.

Be sure you make a new layer for each Custom Shape.

Add a color to the background layer so that the outer glow shows up.

Save this as Your Name_Custom Shapes + Layer Styles.

Objectives

Read and follow directions

Create Photoshop document correctly

Copy photos into Photoshop on multiple layers

Resize and move photos in a Photoshop document


1. Open Photoshop

2. Go to Window>Workspace>Default Workspace

3. Go to File>New>Name: type your name_photoshop collage_10_6 or 7

Width: 11 inches (not pixels)

Height: 7 inches

Resolution: 100

Color Mode: RGB color

Background Contents: White


Click OK


NOTE: Look in the top Options Bar, right below the word “Photoshop”.

Be sure that Auto Select Layer is checked.








You will move images on their layers by using the move tool.

The Move Tool is top, black arrow in the Tool Bar.







1. Place seven images in this Photoshop document. You can use images you have used in your earlier assignments or get images from in caedes.net. caedes.net

2. Resize the images so they fit in the document.

3. Arrange them in an interesting layout.

4. Have one center of interest.

5. Type your name in one area or space. Your name should be at least 24 points.

6. Color the background.




Remember that you can turn off the eyeballs on Photoshop layers to simplify what you are doing to each layer.
