standard 13_the design process

Design is a creative process that occurs in many settings. The steps outlined below offer a structured format for a formal design process based on models from industry.
Analyze the situation
Before beginning the design, sort out what problem you are trying to address.
Write a brief
Write a short statement giving the general outline of the problem to be solved.
Research the problem
Sometimes a problem can be solved "straight out of your head," but in most cases you will need to gain some new information and knowledge.
Write a specification
This detailed description of the problem spells out what the design must achieve and what limitations will affect the final solution.
Work out possible solutions
Combine your ideas with information obtained from your research to suggest several possible design solutions. Sketch several possibilities on paper.
Select a preferred solution
Decide which solution to develop. Although the chosen solution should, ideally, be the one that best satisfies the specifications, other constraints such as time, cost, or skills may limit the decision.
Prepare working drawings and plan ahead
Draw the chosen design including all the details that are important to its construction.
Construct a prototype
Make the product. In industry a model is usually built first and the final product is developed from it, but in most classrooms, the model is the final product.
Test and evaluate the design
Testing is ongoing as the construction progresses, but a final test of the entire system or model proves if the project does the job for which it is designed. Look back at the specifications and check the requirements carefully. Ask such questions as: How well does the design function? Does the design look good? Is the product safe to use? Were suitable materials used? How could I have improved on my design?
Write a report
The report provides evidence of your work in analysis, planning, designing, carrying out the practical work, evaluating, and communicating.

1617 standards 4 and 5 Graphic Design Career

Standards

4) Identify and analyze the career pathways in art and design professions and the industries in which art and design professionals work, including but not limited to manufacturing, specialized design services, publishing, and advertising. Cite supporting evidence from multiple sources (such as interviews with design professionals retrieved from industry magazines), summarize the aptitudes and training needed for at least three careers of interest. For example, outline the typical requirements needed to become a graphic designer, including personal aptitudes and secondary and postsecondary training required. Devise a tentative career plan to reach employment goals. (TN Reading 1, 29; TN Writing 2, 7)

5) Compile and analyze real-time and projected labor market data from public sources such as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics to explore local and regional occupational opportunities and trends in design careers. Synthesize collected data to develop an informational artifact comparing occupations by job availability, salaries, and benefits. (TN Reading 2; TN Writing 4, 9)

Assignment objectives:
• Read and comprehend what you have read
• Understand what a graphic designer does as a career
• Know what you would need to do in order to become a successful graphic designer
• Have a sense of the future career opportunities in the field of visual communications

The assignment:
Read and answer the questions below for this assignment. Go to the indicated links for information.

What I want you to know or do:
1. Create and save a Photoshop document correctly. (Correct size and into a folder)
2. Communicate the meaning of the art elements and principles of design.
3. Use Photoshop tools correctly

What I want you to do today:

The principles of design are guidelines for how to arrange the art elements to create "good" design composition.

The principles of design

Balance: a principle of design that refers to the equalization of elements in a work of art. There are three types of balance
Asymmetrical-balance in which one side of the composition appears  different from the other side while remaining   balanced with it.
Symmetrical- balance in which both sides are identical.
Radial-balance based on a circle, with features radiating from a central point.

Contrast: a principle of design that refers to differences in values, colors, textures, and other elements in artwork to  achieve emphasis and interest.

Emphasis: a principle of design by which the artist or designer may use opposing sizes or shapes, contrasting colors, or other means to place greater attention on certain areas or objects in a work of art. Emphasis is achieved by dominance  and subordination, bright against dull, light on dark, large among small, etc.

Movement: a principle of design that refers to the arrangement of parts in artwork to create a flow of the viewer’s eye  through the repeated arrangement of line, shape, color, texture or value; through the orderly positioning of objects;  through contrasting positive and negative shapes; through contrasting sizes; or through gradation of colors and values.

Pattern: a principle of design in which combinations of lines, colors, and shapes are repeated. These repetitions create rhythm in a work of art.

Unity: a principle of design that refers to a sense of wholeness or oneness in an artwork. In other words, all the parts look  like they belong together. Unity involves the co-ordination of all these parts to communicate the idea of the artwork.

No  one element in a design is an entity in itself. Each element is positioned and organized to contribute to the harmony  and unity of the total design.

Unity requires varying emphases so that the design has dominant and subordinate parts.

Unity may be achieved by repetition of color, texture, value, shape, and/or line; by similarity-the colors, shapes or textures  all resemble each other; and by grouping or overlapping visual elements.

Principles of Design assignment

Illustrate the meaning of the principles of design by combining images of the principles with their written definitions. Find images on-line.
Use the definitions above.

For your typeface, choose Times, regular, 14 pt. You choose the color.

Important tip: Go to Window>Layers and be sure Layers is checked. Look at your Layers Palette. Click on an eyeball to turn layers off. This simplifies your work. Click on the eyeball again to turn it back on.
