2. Read for information
Read the information below, "What is a logo" and  "Top 7 Tips on What Makes a Good Logo", about logos and good logo design.  Read to learn what makes a "good logo". As you  read, answer these questions.

4. What is a logo? (Write one to three sentences, using your own words)

5. List the 7 characteristics of a good logo. You may paraphrase.

3. Look at the personal logo you designed in class. Is it a "good logo"? Write one to three sentences, using the information in the
"Top 7 Tips on What Makes a Good Logo" article proving that your logo is good.

What is a logo?

A logo is a design symbolizing an organization or company. It is a design that is used by an organization for its letterhead, advertising material, and signs as an emblem by which the organization can easily be recognized, also called logotype. Logotype is a graphic representation or symbol of a company name, trademark, abbreviation, etc., often uniquely designed for ready recognition.

You may also think of a logo as a simple visual mark to identify your company product or service. There are different types of signs and emblems easily recognized and associated with purposes. For example, crests are used to identify a country or family. There was a time when only big enough organizations could afford to make their own crest. They were in some cases very detailed drawing with many objects to enrich the crest. Cost was not an issue and more was considered better. Then flags were used due to their larger format. They were visible from the craft fields from long distances. Road signs were designed for informational purposes. They use such techniques as contrasting colors, simplified and yet stylish formats to identify and attract more attention and convey information.
Now days, the most popular and successful companies continue to say that "simpler is better", especially today when everything is moving so fast you have less and less time to impress your customers. So it has to be done in a very stylish manner yet remaining conservative so that it`s easier for the eye to catch and the brain to memorize your logo design.

These days you also have to consider the reproduction cost. More detailed and colorful logo designs are harder to reproduce and they of course cost more. You also have to consider the size that your logo is going to be used at. The perfect logo design will look great on a sign board as well as on a business card or on a pen for example.

We have talked about the general use of a logo. Now we are going to get into a more detail look at the logo. There are some general types of logos: Iconic Logo - Some kind of graphical element related to the business field or just an abstract image, for example: Nike, AOL, Micheline. Logotype - Logo based only on the company name. A unique font, or unique layout style can make a great logo, for example: Sony, Coca-Cola , IBM.

Top 7 Tips on What Makes a Good Logo?
By Vukan Karadzic

1. The first characteristic of an effective logo is that it has immediate impact. Your logo should catch the viewer's eye and hold the viewer's attention. Consider the logo of Apple Computers; the graphic apple with a stylized bite taken out of it has immediate product and corporate identification with consumers. An effective logo "grabs" attention.

2. In addition to impact, a good logo must be good to look at. An effective logo should have the look and feel of "art", if a logo is not appealing to the eye it will defeat its purpose - attracting attention and providing effective identification.

3. A good logo must also copy well. In any business or organization, the use of a logo becomes ubiquitous - it is ever-present on buildings, letterhead, signs, products, promotional items, etc. A good logo will be as effective on a business card as it is on a billboard - small scale and large scale uses. Will the logo still be recognizable printed on the barrel of a ballpoint pen?

4. This brings us to the next characteristic of an effective logo the logo must create or evoke a positive image. "Branding" is a common marketing principle based on product identification growing out of identifying a product with a positive image and a sense of goodwill.

5. Another characteristic of a good logo is that it accurately represents the organization or business. If a company or organization wants to project a serious, professional image, the logo must look professional. A humorous or whimsical logo would be counterproductive to projecting professionalism.

6. The best logos are the most memorable logos. The Apple Computer "Apple" logo and the McDonald's Hamburgers "golden arches" are great logos because they are memorable to the point of being iconic.

7. A logo identifies a business or organization so it would be counterproductive to change it because it did not wear well over time. Do you remember what we said about "branding" earlier in this article? Companies that have invested vast amounts of money, time, and effort to establish their "brand" do not change it frequently for a reason. Make sure your logo will be "timeless" for the same reason.

Now..........

Create a sketch of a logo design using your initials and your name. Then create your logo in Photoshop. The design should consist of a simple graphic symbol and also use your initials in its design. Your design should display at least five of the seven characteristics of a good logo.

For ideas,  do your own research for logo ideas online.

Here is how you will be graded:

The logo design:

____1. Contains the correct words and imagery (50 points)
This means your name and a symbol. A symbol could be your initials. You are not required to use your initials.
____2. Contains at least 5 characteristics of a good logo (50 points)
___a. Has immediate impact. An effective logo "grabs" attention.
 (10 points)
___b. Good to look at. Appealing to the eye. (10 points)
___c. Will copy well. (6 points)
___d. Must create or evoke a positive image. (6 points)
___e. Accurately represents the organization or business. (6 points)
    ___f. Is memorable (6 points)
___g. Could be timeless (6 points)
