Why you are taking this class.
This class has 2 main purposes:
1. Preparing you for college and/or
2. Preparing you for a career in visual communications

What does someone who has a career in the field of visual communications do?
1. Designs websites
2. Designs on-line games
3. Designs ads, posters, logos, packaging
4. Computer animation
5. Photography
6. All of the above and more



What are the 2 main elements (not computers) used by designers creating visual communications?
Images (pictures) and words (text)

Illustrate the meaning of the word “inspiration” visually, using both traditional media and digital media.

What I want you to know or do:

1. How to illustrate the meaning of a word or concept visually
2. Create visual art that communicates ideas through the use of media, techniques, and processes.

Standards:

15) Create two-dimensional and three-dimensional sketches, including rough and refined sketches, demonstrating shape, volume, depth, and dimension. Distinguish among common illustration techniques used in design composition such as one-point, two-point, and multi-point perspective drawings. Develop conceptual design ideas using freehand sketching. For a given design problem, generate, analyze, and refine sketches to develop design solutions. Use the sketches to create refined drawings utilizing design software

description of assignment

There are two parts to this assignment. The first part involves using type and adding layer styles such as a drop shadow and bevel and emboss. The second part is using custom shape tools, making a new layer for each custom shape and adding layer styles to custom shapes.

Objectives:
To read and follow directions
To create a Photoshop document according to directions
To use the Typing Tool to create and color type
To use the Custom Shape Tool to create custom shapes on separate layers
To resize type using the Free Transform command
To apply Layer Styles to a type layer

1. Open photoshop. If photoshop is not already open, in the finder menu bar, go to Go>Applications>Adobe Photoshop CS5

Go to Window>Workspace>Essentials, Design, or Painting

2. Go to File>New>Name: type your first and last name_inspiration illustration
width: 14 inches (not pixels)
height: 7 inches
resolution: 200
color mode: rgb
background contents: white
click OK

If your layers palette is not showing, go to Window>Layers

Typing letters on a layer

1. Click on the T in the tools palette and select the Horizontal Type Tool





2. Click once inside the document window. Do not click and drag.
3. In the Options Bar, select a Typeface, Point Size  (18 or larger), and Color



4. Type the letter "i"
5. Click on the check mark on the top menu
6. Resize: go to Edit>Free Transform. Scale and resize the letter.
7. Click the check mark when you have what you want or the cancel button if it’s not what you want.
8. Repeat these steps, using different typefaces and colors, until you spell out "inspirational"

Move the letters
1. Be sure you have Auto Select>Layers checked
2. Go to the move tool





Applying Layer Styles

1. Look at the Layers Palette and be sure the layer you want to work with is still highlighted
2. In the Photoshop menu bar, go to Layer>Layer Style
3. Go to Drop Shadow. Click OK when you have what you want.

Apply another Layer Style
1. In the Photoshop menu bar, go to Layer>Layer Style
2. Apply bevel & emboss


Save your work



Now, warp type on each layer by using the Warp Type Tool





Remember, you can click the "eyeballs" off and on to work with individual layers more easily.

To finish, apply a background color using the Paint Bucket Tool

Save your work into your folder


Assessment
1. Correct number of type layers
2. Correct layer styles
3. Warp Tool used on all layers
4. Backgroud layer is colored










Part two

Create another Photoshop document using the same specifications as the one you just finished.

Use the Custom Shape Tool to create 7 different custom shapes with 7 different colors on 7 different layers. Apply a different layer style to each custom shape layer. Apply these layer styles: drop shadow, bevel and emboss, outer glow, gradient overlay (click on Gradient: to see all the different gradients), and 3 different pattern overlays.

Be sure you make a new layer for each Custom Shape.

Add a color to the background layer so that the outer glow shows up.

Save this as Your Name_Custom Shapes + Layer Styles.
