september 11_ custom shapes and layer styles

Standard:

1. How to use Photoshop tools correctly
2. Communicate ideas with text and images

Emphasis
4. What does the word emphasis mean?
5. How could you show emphasis with color?

Today's assignment:

Use the Custom Shape Tool to create 7 different custom shapes with 7 different colors on 7 different layers. 

Apply a different layer style to each custom shape layer. 

Apply these layer styles: drop shadow, bevel and emboss, outer glow, gradient overlay (click on Gradient: to see all the different gradients), and 3 different pattern overlays.

Show emphasis in one part of your design.

Steps:
1. Open Photoshop. If Photoshop is not already open, go to Launchpad or in the finder menu bar, go to Applications>Adobe Photoshop CS5

Go to Window>Workspace>Essentials, Design, or Painting

2. Go to File>New>Name: type your first and last name_custom shapes 2
width: 11 inches (not pixels)
height: 14 inches
resolution: 100
color mode: rgb
background contents: white
click OK

3. Select to the custom shape tool

Click and drag to create a Custom Shape.

Make 7 different shapes, using 7 different colors.

Move and resize the shapes

1. Look at the Layers Palette and be sure the layer you want to work with is still highlighted
2. In the Photoshop menu bar, go to Layer>Layer Style
3. Apply the layer styles indicated in the assignment
4. Show emphasis


Remember, you can click the "eyeballs" off and on to work with individual layers more easily.

To finish, apply a background color using the Paint Bucket Tool

Assessment:

Does the artwork
1. Have the correct number of layers and layer styles?
2. Have the correct number of colors?
3. Have a background layer that is colored?

When you finish:
•Make a folder if you do not have one.
•File artwork and answer sheets in folder. Exam questions may come from answer sheets.
For example, "What is the projected growth outlook for graphic designers in computer systems design and related services?"
