final exam review 2014

Final exam review & study guide
Digital Arts & Design 1 rev 4_19_2014

For the exam, know the following Photoshop information:
To create a new document in  Photoshop go to File>New

To move type or shapes on a layer you should select the desired layer and select the Move Tool on the Tools Palette

To create the correct Photoshop workspace for this class, go to Window>Workspace>Essentials or
Window>Workspace>Design.

To type words on a new Photoshop layer, select the Typing Tool and click once in the document window

To resize an image in Photoshop, go to Edit>Transform>Scale or Edit>Free Transform. If you do not see handles on the resize box, go to View>Fit on Screen. When the image is the size you want it, click on the check mark in the Options Bar to apply the transformation. If the transformation is not what you want, click on the cancel button.

When you have resized type or a custom shape, click on the check mark in the Photoshop Options Bar to Apply the Transformation.

To open a JPEG (JPG) file, drag the jpeg file icon to the Photoshop icon. Double clicking a JPEG file is not the best way to open this file to work on it in Photoshop.

In the layers palette, the two the visual clues that tell you a layer is visible and active are:
1. you see an eye,  and 2. that the layer is highlighted blue.

You make a layer invisible by clicking once on the eye on that layer. You can make it visible again by clicking on the blank space where the eye was originally.

To select a type layer so that you can change the color of the type on that layer, double click on the  uppercase "T" in the layers palette.

Explain how to place an original document such as a photo or scan into a new Photoshop document. The process is:
1. Create the new Photoshop document. Be sure you see your layers palette. If you do not, go to Windows>then check Layers. 2. Open the original photo or scan by dragging it onto the Photoshop icon in the Dock. 3. Click and hold on the original photo or scan in its layers palette. 4. Drag it into the new document.

what makes a good logo

Your name:                                                                                      Block:

What makes a good logo?

Answer these questions.

1. What is the first characteristic of an effective logo?

2. In addition to impact, a good logo must be good to look at. An effective logo should have the look and feel of "art", if a logo is not appealing to the _______________ it will defeat its purpose - attracting attention and providing effective identification.

3. A good logo must also copy well. In any business or organization, the use of a logo becomes ubiquitous - it is ever-present on buildings, letterhead, signs, products, promotional items, etc. A good logo will be as effective on a __________________ __________ as it is on a ___________________________- small scale and large scale uses.

4. An effective logo must create or evoke a _______________________ ________________________.

5. Another characteristic of a good logo is that it _____________________ ___________________ the organization or business.

6. The best logos are the most _____________________________ logos.

7. A logo will be ___________________________________ for the same reason.

Think for yourself:

8. In number 7, what does the word timeless mean?

9. What is one famous logo?

10. Does it meet all the characteristics of a good logo?

Top 7 Tips on What Makes a Good Logo?
By Vukan Karadzic

1. The first characteristic of an effective logo is that it has immediate impact. Your logo should catch the viewer's eye and hold the viewer's attention. Consider the logo of Apple Computers; the graphic apple with a stylized bite taken out of it has immediate product and corporate identification with consumers. An effective logo "grabs" attention.

2. In addition to impact, a good logo must be good to look at. An effective logo should have the look and feel of "art", if a logo is not appealing to the eye it will defeat its purpose - attracting attention and providing effective identification.

3. A good logo must also copy well. In any business or organization, the use of a logo becomes ubiquitous - it is ever-present on buildings, letterhead, signs, products, promotional items, etc. A good logo will be as effective on a business card as it is on a billboard - small scale and large scale uses. Will the logo still be recognizable printed on the barrel of a ballpoint pen?

4. This brings us to the next characteristic of an effective logo the logo must create or evoke a positive image. "Branding" is a common marketing principle based on product identification growing out of identifying a product with a positive image and a sense of goodwill.

5. Another characteristic of a good logo is that it accurately represents the organization or business. If a company or organization wants to project a serious, professional image, the logo must look professional. A humorous or whimsical logo would be counterproductive to projecting professionalism.

6. The best logos are the most memorable logos. The Apple Computer "Apple" logo and the McDonald's Hamburgers "golden arches" are great logos because they are memorable to the point of being iconic.

7. A logo identifies a business or organization so it would be counterproductive to change it because it did not wear well over time. Do you remember what we said about "branding" earlier in this article? Companies that have invested vast amounts of money, time, and effort to establish their "brand" do not change it frequently for a reason. Make sure your logo will be "timeless" for the same reason.
